my kind of dancers

I really like the Cat's Corner manifesto:

1. We dance for fun. We dance to express, not to impress.

2. We dance the dance of the people. Lindy Hop and Charleston are street dances. They exist through us.

3. We dance to jazz music. Swing dance is born on the rhythms of hot jazz in the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Lindy Hop is danced to jazz.

(We hope to go to Cat's Corner when we're in Montreal in February.)

Here's an odd roll call.
I am having some issues with how this blog displays in Explorer, and wondering whether to put time into resolving them.
We never use Explorer, much preferring Firefox.

hooray for Hollywood?

I've seen several movies lately, mostly because of our vacation.  The in-seat screens on the airplanes are very nice!
Brave One - Usually I like Jodie Foster movies, but this one had no redeeming qualities.
I watched this one on the flight from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale.

Man on Fire - Again, I like the actors (Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning) but I wasn't a fan of the movie; it is very violent.  Really, it seemed oddly cast - Bruce Willis would have been better suited for Denzel's role.
We borrowed this DVD from our hotel's owners.

Gone in 60 Seconds - Angelina's character's hair was very distracting...
We borrowed this DVD from our hotel's owners.

Matchmaker - This was a good movie!  Set mostly in Ireland, a love story of sorts.  Janeane Garofalo doesn't usually get to be the love interest!
(Wendy - have you seen this movie?  I'm curious about how accurate their portrayal of Ireland is!)
We borrowed this DVD from our hotel's owners.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets - the boobytrapped ruins really were reminiscent of Indiana Jones.
We paid (too much) to see this in the theatre in Florida.

The Heartbreak Kid - Too crude for my taste.
I watched this one on the flight from Fort Lauderdale to Toronto.

Nanny Diaries - surprisingly enjoyable, and I'm not even a Scarlett fan; the anthropology angle was interesting.
I watched this one on the flight from Toronto to Winnipeg.

Kingdom of Heaven - wow, violent... what was I expecting in a war about the crusades?
I watched this at home (yay DVR!), in snatches, while folding all the laundry after our trip.

We saw a few trailers when we were at the theatre in Fort Lauderdale, and now we are looking forward to spring:
Speed Racer
Prince Caspian
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Vantage Point looks like the kind of movie I'd enjoy more than Lyndon.
Maybe even Horton Hears A Who and Kung Fu Panda.

Sunday SoFLEx

I have been using my BAM bag a lot on this trip; thanks again, Todd!

Sunday afternoon's SoFLEx was at Beach Place, which is about a dozen blocks from our hotel.  It was drizzly for part of the time there, but actually the surface was easier to dance on when it was wet!
This photo was taken at the start of the event, before the 'dance floor' got crowded.

On our walk back to Vistamar, we saw these plants and I enjoyed the thought of God creating those leaves.

SoFLEx on Sunday evening was by far the best of the events.

  • The DJs were playing good music!
  • The live music by Nicole Henry was great.
  • It was much easier to dance with a wider variety of people.

Of course, by this time I thought that I was adjusting to the Fort Lauderdale scene, and I wore jeans because I'd always been cold in a skirt at the other events.  But this venue had little airconditioning, and I was hot because I was able to dance much more frequently.  Oh well, I was happy to trade heat for fun.

You can see their black/white floor, and the restaurant adjacent to this bar/dancing area was done in classic-car decor, which was a lot of fun.

sunny Saturday

I haven't taken any ibuprofen since we arrived.  That's the longest stretch of time I've been able to go without it in years and years.

More lovely weather, and we didn't take it for granted!

I'm going to miss our daily walks on the beach.

The afternoon's SoFLEx event was at John. U Lloyd state park, which is really close to the cruise port; we also watched a few ships leave.

Saturday night's SoFLEx venue was good - large and airconditioned and not as dark.  But there were even more people there, making it difficult to find any real estate to dance on.

long-awaited heat

Thursday we went to the Swap Shop.  We'd driven by it a few times (both last year and this visit) and decided it would at least be interesting.  It is huge.  Parts of it feel very much like the markets in LatinAmerica.  We wondered how some of the vendors make a living since they seemed to have junk on display and no customers whatsoever.
Lyndon bought another pair of shoes, and a small bag/murse.
I got a purse; Andrea will understand my hope that it is the perfect purse, but at ten dollars it isn't under a lot of pressure to perform.
Oh, and I also got a hard case for my sunglasses.  I've been denying myself one for a year already so now I'm pleased with the $3 deal.
We had a delicious supper at Tamarindo, once we finally found it!  Mmmmm, shrimp.  Lyndon had pork-something.
Then we were off to the pre-SoFLEx dance.  There seems to be some time-eating disease that accompanies dancers; they weren't ready on time either!  We've often been frustrated at home when dances don't start on time, mostly because we want to dance early and go home early, not stay out all night.
The music was alright; some DJs just play weirder music.  There was less music from the 30s and 40s than we generally use in Wpg (and which I prefer).
Two guys in their 80s sat close to us, and I had to dance more often with them than I would have preferred.
I was surprised by how many of the women wore pants, especially jeans.  They're so hot to dance in, and why wear jeans in Florida anywhere, especially to something active?

On Friday it was finally HOT!  This is the weather I've been waiting for.
(live view of the beach, a few blocks from us)
28 degrees, feels like 35 with the humidex.
We went to Lauderdale-by-the-sea this morning so Lyndon could snorkel; there's a reef there.  When we got back we ate lunch then enjoyed a walk on 'our' beach.  We managed to get the right amount of sun - no burns yet.
We tried to find San Loco Catina without luck, so we went back to Jalisco for supper.  Mmmmm.  I'm going to miss the easy availability of good Mexican eats.

On Friday evening, SoFLEx officially began.  We were surprised by the venue; we'd expected a larger dance floor.  The floor was crowded all night - it is good to see a floor full of pulsing energetic dancers, but it is frustrating to not be able to find some space during a good song.  The floor was very slippery too; I was glad that my rubber-soled shoes were in the car!
The band was very good and the vocalist was terrifically easy to listen to.  He commented several times that is great to play/sing for people who were actually listening and enjoying the music, so it seems that they don't generally play for dancers.  Fairly good selection of tempos, but long songs as is usual with live music.

The DJs were much better on Friday as well, thankfully.
Many of the dancers sure don't seem to dress for dancing.  Lots of longsleeves, shirts that tie at the back, etc.
We made it to the late-night for a while and were pleasantly surprised by the food they had there - much more than any PLEx.  We stayed only about an hour before tiredness took over; we got back to Vistamar around 2 a.m.

20th anniversary

We had to wear sweaters to walk on the beach today; it was not warm weather.
I wore this Tshirt to honor our anniversary, and got a few comments on it throughout the day.  Guys seem to like it; women aren't as impressed (some seem to think that my hubby 'made' me wear it).

This afternoon we went to Las Olas boulevard.  It wasn't as entertaining as we'd expected.  Not as interesting as Corydon or Osborne or even the Forks.  But it is supposedly one of the big things to do here.
It has been very windy today, and more so as the day went on.
Supper at Mangos, which is also where we celebrated last year.

Tuesday in FL

Lyndon was able to sleep later this morning, so that made him happier.
After breakfast we drove to Sawgrass Mills. Again, Lyndon outshopped me, coming out with two pairs of shoes, two hats, and a book. I bought a Tshirt and a hat (and a calendar for Todd).

Definitely the most entertaining part of the experience was trying hats on at Burlington; they have lots of hilarious hats; Lyndon took a few photos.

A post-shopping walk on the beach; Lyndon is wearing one of his new hats:

We are really enjoying spending time together and having the chance to relax together.

Monday in FL

Cooler today; about 23 at the warmest part of the day.  We did get a nice walk in the morning before the wind came up.
We putted around a bit to a few stores but didn't purchase anything - can't buy stuff every day!
It was very windy and cool for our second walk at around 3 in the afternoon.  We walked on the sidewalk beside the beach instead of on the sand this time.  We went to the location of one of the SoFLEx events to confirm that we could actually walk there on Sunday.
Supper at HeartRock Sushi was okay but not fabulous, and expensive.

quote of the day

from Paul Rudnick's I'll Take It
If it was wildly fulfilling to be a housewife, men would be housewives, they would battle for the privilege.

humidity (edited)

My skin is drinking up this humidity!

We had a walk on the beach this morning, before the rain came.

After lunch at our suite (tortillas etc.) we went to the Galleria mall and did some shopping.
Supper tonight at Jalisco; my shrimp were delicious.
Another walk on the beach after dark, and then we watched Titan AE.

Nothing much to report on yesterday's travel day.  Two flights (much better inflight movie/TV options than previous trips), got a rental car, checked in here at the hotel, then went to Publix to get groceries.  Got a text message from Todd, who needed plunger advice (apparently he was able to deal with that yet last night).

I do miss my pillow...

Rules for Being Human

I really like John Maxwell's 'Rules for Being Human'
  1. You will learn lessons.
  2. There are no mistakes - only lessons.
  3. A lesson is repeated until it is learned.
  4. If you don't learn the easy lessons, they get harder.
  5. You'll know you've learned a lesson when your actions change.
(from Failing Forward)

This is what I've been trying to get through to Todd, and it is nice to see them all laid out in a book.

interesting symptom

I've been sickish for a few days.  Headachey, feverish, just feeling lousy.  Today I've got a new symptom:  it feels like my cheekbones are moving forward and will come out the front of my face.  Weird, I know.  It feels weird, too.  Very distracting.

rate your day

I've been skimming some John Maxwell books lately.  I wanted to read Failing Forward but haven't got my hands on that one yet.  From Today Matters:
How often do you have a great day?  Is it the norm or the rare exception for you?  Take today, for example.  How would you rate it?  So far, has today been a great day?  Or has it been less than wonderful?  Perhaps you haven't even thought about it until now.  If I asked you to rate today on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being perfect), would you even know how to score it?  Upon what would you base your rating?  Would it depend on how you feel?  Would it be determined by how many items you've checked off your to-do list?  Would you score your day according to how much time you've spent with someone you love?  How do you define success for today?

Everyone wants to have a good day, but not many people know what a good day looks like - much less how to create one.  And even fewer people understand how the way you live today impacts you tomorrow.  The root of the problem is that most people misunderstand success.  If we have a faulty view of success, we take a faulty approach to our day.  As a result, today falls to pieces.

I haven't had a great day in quite a while, so I should keep reading!

Stardust

We watched Stardust last night, a fairy tale for adults.  Good movie!
