I want this job at SBC,
but [a] it is too far away,
and [b] I can't work that many hours a week while still homeschooling.

    a reason to celebrate

    My friends - the Irish Canucks - welcomed a son yesterday;
little Gabriel was 5 pounds, 2 ounces.
    Congratulations!!!

    more vanity about my hair

I have now gone three and a half weeks without shampoo. (Well, I did use a LITTLE bit after our Kintic gig since I had to douse my head in hairspray to make it approximate a 1940s style.) Going without shampoo isn't nearly as bad as I expected. If you have curly hair, I encourage you to give it a try.

The hairdresser that we go to isn't keen on the dry-cut method. She has been trained to do it, but says that it leaves the ends of the hair damaged. She also is of the opinion that my hair isn't curly enough for that kind of cut/style. So I'm back to square one.

On an episode of What Not to Wear that I saw recently, the woman cried with joy at having her hair cut by Nick.
I don't think joyful tears are a very common post-haircut experience!

    -sigh-

    I still NEED a haircut.
I think it is behaving better without shampoo, but it is way too long. And it has no style.
    None.
    Blech.

A few weeks ago I saw someone else with basically my exact hair, and seeing it objectively on someone else was good. I really didn't like it. At first I just didn't like her hair and then I realized that her hair was the same as my hair. So that was an "uggg" moment.

People with straight hair get to have a hairstyle.
I regularly break the tenth commandment in regards to seeing women with actual hairstyles.
I have curls, but no style. I resent it.

It feels very vain to rant about something so shallow, but most women would agree that how our hair looks can overshadow pretty much anything else about how we feel about how we look.

    amazing quilts

You all know that I'm not particularly a fan of quilts, but these are quite impressive

    er...

This could be a weekend update, if I could remember what we did this weekend...
    Lyndon washed cars.
We had a Kinetic practice at Pat's studio.  I DJed at the Legion on Saturday. Our small group met on Sunday.

Two brilliant Bluejays have moved in to our front lawn.

Todd's overdue haircut finally happened today.

My Amazon order arrived: 3 new CDs!
      Martyn Joseph: Deep Blue
      BNL: Gordon
      BNL: Maybe You Should Drive

And today I cured anait's hiccups from afar. My powers are growing!

Peacebang has crossed over to the dark side.

    long, but with interesting bits

It is Monday again; the weekend is over.
Lyndon is gone north again on business, although this week's trip is only one night away.
Todd & I are staring at another week's worth of schoolwork.

    FRIDAY
Todd went to youth; Lyndon & I had WT practice with Dorothy and Matt. Such nice people. The evening was much better than my mood (which eventually improved a bit).

    SATURDAY
    Lyndon: chiro
    Todd: cousins at my mom's
Lyndon & I: Kinetic dress rehearsal
    Lyndon: haircut
    Bailey: grocery shopping
Lyndon & I: swap off Tweety's winter tires
everyone: supper at my mom & dad's (belated easter)*
Lyndon & I: dancing at the Legion**
Yes, it was a crazybusy day.

    *I ate way too much.
My dad is recovering from shoulder surgery (rotator cuff) and is enduring enforced immobility - a very unnatural state for him.
** They want us to use the main level room at the Legion whenever possible. I am disappointed. The dance floor there is smaller and dirtier. Certain regular Legion patrons tend to be drunk, rude, and insulting.

    SUNDAY
The worship gathering was really good:
    • The most recent workteam to Nicaragua reported to us, which was challenging.
    • The fellow from LBE was too longwinded, though.
    • The worship music went surprisingly well (from my p.o.v.) and Dorothy did a great job as WL.
    • We learned that Tammy is sicker.
    • A truly lovely individual told me something that I didn't want to hear. <sigh> God speaks through our interactions with people, and sometimes He says, "No, please do not take a break from WT" and you can tell by the look in His eye that He thinks you should perhaps not be sighing about it, and that you might need to take a teeny tiny look at your attitude.
Home to eat, pack for L's trip, pack for the gig, tidy up, cook, eat again, get into costume, and hustle downtown to the Millenium Center. The gig was a fun-night for this year's Professional Photographer's Convention.

We checked the dancing surface, agreed on staging, tested the music, connected with the event organizer, and then waited our turn. Nearly half the attendees embraced the 'Fabulous 40s' theme and were all decked out in great clothes. I've never seen so many hats worn in one room before. It was fun to just look at all the costumes.

The Kinetic follows wore their new blouses for the first time, and I think they're a hit. No wardrobe malfunctions. It was also Cam's first performance in zoot pants.
I hope to get a few photos from the event organizers, and will let you know when they're available.

We were the first "act" in the show, which was a 1940s nightclub show. No mistakes, as far as I know. (Overture, Choo Choo Ch'Boogie, Kick in the Head, Opus One) The new Overture choreography is terrific.

Since they had a few empty tables, we were invited to stay for the buffet supper. A few of our guys put away a lot of food! It was tasty stuff, and I especially appreciated the tiramisu.

We were overrun with compliments from the photographers.
The rest of the nightclub act was a murder mystery, which suffered from poor amplification (and also was likely too long).
That venue is not a good place for sound, especially when filled with networking conventioners.
Fortunately, much of our performance is visual! And our act was high-energy and short, so they didn't have time to lose interest.

Unfortunately Lyndon & I couldn't stay for the open dancing after supper. He had to be up at 4:15 this morning and they still hadn't started clearing the dance floor by 9:30. It would have been great to dance on the marble there, but sleep is sometimes (only sometimes!) more important than dancing.

Oh - and we got to see our friend, Rod (he's a professional photographer, ergo his attendance last night). Lyndon was able to spend much more time chatting with him than I was, but at least I got a Rod-hug, and that hasn't happened for years.

    timely quote

Mid-life is when you look at your attitude-challenged, eye-rolling, sleep-deprived teenager and think: "For this I have stretch marks?"
I love him - I really do, but sometimes... sheesh!!

    birthdate

My birthday is approaching, so this is appropriately timed.

    The rules are:

    1) Go to Wikipedia
    2) In the search box, type your birth month and day but not the year
    3) List three events that happened on your birthday
    4) List two important birthdays and one death
    5) One holiday or observance (if any)

    EVENTS:
2006 - construction began on the Freedom Tower for the new World Trade Center in New York City
1994 - the first democratic election in South Africa in which black citizens could vote

    This is amusing.

    easter weekend

We had a great weekend in Saskatchewan with Lyndon's sister and her family.

The kids were fun and outgoing.  I'm always glad that they don't take a long time to warm up to us or to Todd, even though we see them so seldom.

I am amazed how effortlessly Elisa turns any place into a
welcoming and relaxing home.  She is very gifted at decorating.

We had good talks and were very encouraged to hear how God is working in their lives.

    Elisa fed us well:
    • delicious souvlaki chicken (with baked potatoes and greek salad)
    • delicious apple pie (which she didn't make but did SHARE with us)
    • delicious tostadas and tacos
    • delicious dark-chocolate-cream pie
Yes, I know that I used 'delicious' four times, but that's what the food was!

    We played Bohnanza
(I won), Ticket to Ride Europe (Scott won?), Settlers of Catan (Todd won), and Ark of the Covenant (Lyndon won).  The kids played games too, but I didn't take note of which ones except for the game created by Ezra.

Duke was charming and approval-seeking; he is a sweet dog.

Photos from the weekend are now on our webshots page; they start on page two of the 2007 album.

We stayed at the Pilgim Inn, which was nice except that the noisy heating/cooling system disrupted our sleep.

We also went a bit futher on Sunday to see Lyndon's grandma, and some aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of his family.
The drive home on Monday felt long... it is a dull stretch of road, plus we got a late start.

    extreme silliness

I seem to now be entering my manic phase.
It has been QUITE the night of packing... good thing there are no hidden cameras here. - they'd be coming with straightjackets.
I'm quite sure that Todd & I have had WAY more fun than Lyndon this evening (he is at a meeting).

    April 03

    am I done yet?

    • staff meeting this morning, and some work in the office
    • World of water
    • library
    • mailbox
    • bank

    hooray for Howie

Howie Mandel was on Ellen today.
He is very open about OCD, which I appreciate
He seems to be very affected by it, but he also has mysophobia, which likely compounds his issues.

Howie doesn't shy away from talking about his struggles - they're just a fact of life, and he still has a good life. He's been married for 27 years, and he seems happy.

    from http://www.austin360.com/tv/content/tv/stories/2007/03/29howie.html

Q: You suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but having OCD hasn't slowed you down one bit. Talk about living with OCD.

A: Yeah, it has slowed me down; maybe not professionally, but it's something that takes a lot of time and effort in my life. I get professional help. I'm in therapy. I deal with it. I'm functioning, and I'm happy that I'm able to talk about it. As much as I make fun of it and I can't shake hands, it's tough at times. But I'm supported by a loving family and great friends, and I'm doing fine.

Q: How has it slowed you down?

A: Just in life. I won't go to certain places. I'll make decisions on where to go based on how I feel. It's not pleasant.

Q: Do you ever watch "Monk"?

A: I live that. I've seen it, and it's wonderful. I wanted to read for it. When I read the script, I thought not only can I play this, I am this. But Tony Shalhoub does an amazing job.

    from http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2006/edition_10-29-2006/Howie_Mandel

Howie attributes some of this manic activity to psychological conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and a germ phobia, that he has had to work through and around his entire life. Even hosting Deal or No Deal, he never shakes hands but merely bumps fists with the contestants.

“I’ve got ADD, I’ve got OCD. In fact, I’d like to buy some more vowels,” he jokes. But then he turns serious: “I think life is just coping, and a lot of people out there have far worse problems than anything I’ve got.”

    from http://www.nbc10.com/entertainment/9081482/detail.html

Mandel explained that when he goes into a hotel room, he orders 26 towels and lays a path on the carpet of his room.

Mandel has also been known to be obsessive about hand-washing and showering -- not to mention that his hairstyle screams of Mr. Clean -- he keeps it clean-shaven.

"A hairstyle? You call this a hairstyle? For my germ phobia, it kind of helps me. It feels cleaner and it's low maintenance," Mandel said.

Even his wife likes the look, he said.

"I walked in and she looked at me and she said, 'That is so sexy.' I felt good and then I thought, 'What have I been all these years?'" Mandel said with a laugh.

    from http://www.channelguidemag.com/articles/mandel.lasso

How are you doing with your OCD?

I'm out here. I'm functioning and I'm actually OK. It's pretty cool, because I know there are a lot of people who suffer from it, and they're not [functioning]. My heart goes out to anybody who's not and isn't functioning. I'm surrounded by great people and great family and I seek help for it. I deal with some of it with a sense of humor, and some of [it] I just take care of.

But you touch people all the time on the show?

No. No. No. That's such a small part of the deal. Shaking hands is my one, and it's not that I never do it, but it's a little bit of an issue. I can hug and I can touch. It doesn't intellectually make any sense to other people, or even to myself, but it's part of what I deal with.

    When did this all start?

From the time I was a kid. I did the talk show and I shook hands, and I've shaken hands, but how it affects me and what it does to my mind is different, so if I don't have to [I don't]. … On this show, I'm more myself than I've ever been.

Even more so than your talk show?

Yeah, because I had to shake hands and they didn't want to deal with that issue. This is me, and you're seeing every side of me — from dramatic, hopefully at times funny, to a little bit flawed in the sense that I can't shake hands. [Until now] I've never been able to just be me on television.
