![]() Here's one that is fun; make it your wallpaper!
This one just messes with my mind. I have proved to myself (in PaintShopPro) that the 2 shades of grey are the same, but my eyes still tell me they're different.
July 19 it makes my head spin...Here's my attempt to make sense of this. I'm sure that I'm nowhere near the truth yet.
Canada & the USA are supporting Israel in this conflict, some say largely because the current leaders are Christians; we Christians seem to feel obligated to support 'God's chosen people.'
(We're not seemingly so concerned for the Christians in Lebanon, which make up about 25% of its population.)
Lebanon's various militia groups were required to disarm after Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon in 2000. Hezbollah has not disarmed, and may have taken the two Israeli soldiers to create a conflict that delays their disarmament.
Hezbollah is supported by Syria and Iran. While Iran may not have asked Hezbollah to created a mid-east crisis right now, they are certainly happy to have the world's attention taken away from their nuclear program.
In the Arab region, Hezbollah is seen as a resistance movement, a political party, and a reconstruction group that provides hospitals and education. Hezbollah are Muslim Shiites.
To Canada, the USA, the UK, and Israel, Hezbollah is a terrorist organization.
Lebanon is a complicated place: the traditional arrangement is that its president is a Maronite Christian, its prime minister is a Sunni Muslim, and its parliamentary speaker is a Shiite Muslim.
Israel's history doesn't necessarily give it legitimate claim to much land in that region, but it is generally accepted that they have a legitimate right to defend their people. How many 'civilians' is it acceptable for Israel to kill and injure while trying to destroy Hezbollah? July 17 hot dancing on July 20, 21, + 28I am anticipating some hot outdoor dancing this week.
On Thursday we'll be dancing for fun at The Forks, enjoying the WJO and Gary Grosvenor. Come on out and listen/watch if you have time; bring a lawn chair.
Kinetic Swing is dancing at The Fringe Festival on Friday (as well as the following Friday) at 7:30 at Old Market Square. That will be a pass-the-hat event, so we've no idea how much (or how little) income will be involved for Kinetic. If you're planning to come to that, be on time because our spots are each only 13 minutes long. And bring money for the hat!
July 12 what to wear...Yes, I've been influenced by TLC's What Not To Wear. They haven't converted me to the tortuous pointy-toe shoe, but I have done a lot of thinking about what kind of clothes I ought to be wearing.
Until a few months ago, 90% of my tops were Tshirts. I like Tshirts, especially with entertaining graphics or epigrams printed on them. However, I realized that they were perhaps unsuitable for me at this point in my life - or at least not appropriate as the majority occupant of my closet.
So I've been trying to make some changes. I've culled a lot of Tshirts. I've tried to wear more grown-up clothing. I've found adult pants to substitute for my previous denim-exclusivity.
Shopping in Minneapolis, I expected that I would have to make some hard choices about what clothes to buy, given a limited budget. Not so! There was precious little that was even an option.
Now that I've concluded that I shouldn't shop like a 21-yr-old, shopping is much more difficult! Apparently the teenyboppers have the buying power, therefore many of the stores are geared towards them.
When I tried to shop "older" it was just dreadful. Why aren't there clothes for those of us in our 30s and 40s? "Older" seems to be 50s and 60s, which I am not yet ready for.
This season's styles are also problematic. Shirts are thin, empire waists don't work on me, and I'm not into the 80s resurgence. I'd like to see some practical skirts, but didn't. I'd like to see some dresses that would fall between music video and prom on the casual-to-formal scale, but didn't.
What to wear is a problem. But it is a 1st world problem, so I'll stop complaining.
July 09 MinneapolisYou all know that I'm not a fan of the U.S.A.
I've been careful on this trip to keep my eyes open for good things about this place:
John Piper on being "taught to see"Another quote from John Piper's Don't Waste Your Life (emphasis mine)
This is a how it is with me, when things are going well. Even though there is so much pain and poverty and lostness in this world, there are also innumerable reasons to be thankful and to worship the One who makes it all possible.
As Michael Card wrote/sang: There is a joy in the journey, there's a light we can love on the way; there is a wonder and wildness to life... July 03 verbal habitsMost of us have verbal crutches that we use by habit.
...or whatever is mine (or at least the one that I'm aware of!) but I think I lifted it from a co-worker.
Canadian are accused of using eh? but I really don't hear it that often. Am I just desensitized?
The valley-girl crutch was like and we were all relieved when that phase was over.
Cursing is also largely a verbal habit, and is much lazier than thinking through what you actually want to say.
go ahead and... is an overused phrase by someone that many of my readers will know.
The verbal habit that I'm noticing more and more in recent month is but um, which tends to come across as "baddum," reminding me of a drum sound. At first I heard it only from one person; now it is spreading! I don't want to be infected. If you hear me baddum, please pinch me. Ditto for eh? I'm already working on or whatever.
