    humidex: 44 degrees

After all was said & done, it worked out to approximately $47 per dancer for our Fringe performances.  Doesn't sound too sad, but keep in mind that
[a] it was too hot to be active outside (the humidex advisory said so), [b] that was for a total of four performances, each of which ate up two to two and a half hours of our afternoon or evening, and [c] we did pay to rent a studio for our dress rehearsal for Fringe.  So, really, it wasn't a financially-motivated activity.

On Saturday we went to my in-law's to help L's sister and her husband who were redecorating the living room.  This will be my mom-in-law's birthday present.  They are coming home today from a week of camping, and we all fervently hope that she doesn't hate it.  The LR & DR are painted a golden yellow color, with a greenish wash... it really is way more attractive than I can make it sound.  We didn't get to see the finished room because we had to come back to the city for a Fringe performance.  We (or at least Todd & I) will see it on Friday.

We saw Ratatouille on Sunday.  Funny movie.  I am hoping to see The Simpsons Movie with Todd yet before the longweekend.
We also had chinese food and a game of Settlers with part of the Diehl clan on Sunday.  It was a good day.

Monday was the memorial service for Tom Hart.  We helped with music.  A nice service, and the church was overfull; everyone loved Tom.

Today we are going to go pick up our free HD TV from Purolater, who tried to deliver it yesterday but our son "didn't hear" the doorbell.  *sigh*  We are optimistic that we can fit it into Tweety.  Wish us luck.
Once we get it set up, we will be calling Shaw to switch to digital TV, and to get a digital recorder.  We'll need more luck with that, I'm thinking.

I have a tall stack of books to read, and I'm looking forward to getting at some of them this weekend.  We're going to Minneapolis, and we will also get to dance to various live bands.  I am happy in advance.  Now, if we could just arrange a drop in gas prices...

    just in case

If my son, or my husband, or a good friend, or even a complete stranger would like to give me another reason to be happy sometime soon, please make these for me:

The recipe is even laid out for you right here.

Of course, I can't make them for myself, because how sad would that be?  Making potato skins for myself and then sitting alone to eat all of them by myself...
Wait, that's starting to sound like not such a bad idea.  Help me!

    heat wave

Whew - what weather!  We were all really ripe after our performances at the Fringe outdoor stage.

Our first performance was on Saturday afternoon at kids' fringe.  Not a big crowd, but we had a good time.  We had to alter our set because one of the leads had to work.
We had arranged with the vocalist who followed us to freestyle dance during his first few songs, which was really nice.  The songs were swingy and it was relaxing (although hot).  Suddenly a young cowboy came onto the back of the stage (from backstage), wanting to cut in.  We assume he must have been involved with one of the Fringe shows, since he was completely decked out in plaid shirt, bandana, jeans, and fur chaps.  He said that he wanted to steal, so we told him to go ahead.  I thought he'd steal one of the two follows who were dancing with each other (you'll recall that we were missing a lead) but he stole me instead - I guess because we were the ones who spoke up.
It is always a bit nerve-wracking to dance with someone for the first time, and more so when you're doing it so publicly, but it was great.  The mystery cowboy is obviously a swing dancer, and we lindyhopped for a few minutes before he gave me back to Lyndon and disappeared backstage.

Later that day we went to Mike & Tiana's for their annual birthday bash.  Their birthdays are twelve days apart, and [July] is a good time to have a bunch of folks over.  Fun evening!
Check out Mike's birthday quiz here.

Our second Fringe freestage performance was Sunday evening.  We were thrilled to have some support in the audience:
    Mike & Tiana
    Tammy
    Debra-Jean (and Jacob)
    Eileen & entourage
    two of our massage therapists
This was our vintage & modern set.  Not too many mistakes, although dancing on that surface is really challenging.
Unfortunately I had neglected to sugar-up on dark chocolate prior to this performance, and I could really feel my energy waning.  During Opus One I was dreading trying to get through Crabbuckit yet too.

Later, we went to Nucci's with Mike, Tiana, Debra-Jean, & Jacob, and got a sugar infusion.

    homophone horror

I have been shuddering a lot while reading wall posts and status updates on Facebook.
    A few examples:
    "...to go from hear to..."
    "...to get their and back..."
"...wondering when Harry is going to dye"

    cursing (mostly) under my breath

May I take a moment to express how much I detest using Microsoft Word?

    It is so stupid!
It makes all sorts of dumb assumptions.
Those Microsoft people think they're putting helpful features into the software, but really they're causing all sorts of extra work and frustration.

    Thank-you for your kind attention.

    external use only

Apparently using sunscreen and insect repellent at the same time greatly increases the absorption of their chemicals into your body. That's not a good thing.  So, we're supposed to choose which of these products to use. Skip the DEET and risk WestNile. Skip the sunscreen and risk burns and cancer.
And people wonder why I stay inside!

    Nestar from Uganda

Wow, what a lot of 'interesting' viewpoints and ideas.

"When two elephants are fighting, it's the grass that suffers.  When we keep blaming the grass... I think we are missing the point."

I encourage you to listen to Nestar.

    "The Secret Life of Bees"

Thanks to Wendy for recommending this book.
I enjoyed it, but in an odd way. I spent an awful lot of time thinking "she's a good writer" while I was reading. I enjoyed Sue Monk Kidd's writing more than I enjoyed the story - does that make sense?

She gave her main character, Lily, a marvelous and unique voice. That alone makes the book worth reading.

She has a few delightful phrases, including:

...split my heart down its seam.

The scent got laid down in me in a permanent way...

...walked along the ledge of the highway, Rosaleen moving at the pace of a bank-vault door...

The wind lifted it on her skirt tails...

...remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful.

...would be like women finding out Jesus had had a twin sister who'd gotten half God's genes but none of the glory.

That old longing spread under me like a great lap, holding me tight.

I doubt that men would be too thrilled with it, though; it is very much a woman's book. Even I found the female-power stuff to be wearing thin.

It occurs to me that this is a book I'd choose if I had to read one aloud.

    lost & found

We've been losing more things as of late.
There was a time in our past when we were organized.  And tidy.  All those sorts of things.
    Lately - not so much.
We're often searching for stuff, and sometimes outright losing things.

Most recently we'd lost a set of keys, Lyndon's sunglasses, and the trailer key.
In the last 24 hours, they've all reappeared!
    - whew -
