August 28 gonna be a dancing extraToday I went to be fitted for a costume for Thursday's shoot.
Lyndon & I will both be extras in a flashback scene in the movie Stone Angel.
It is a flashback to a 1940s small-town dance, and they need extras who can lindyhop.
We don't really know what to expect, but it will be an experience!
August 23 time wastersIf there's something you need to avoid doing, I have some suggestions to make the avoidance more pleasant.
I quite enjoyed this, but then again I'm almost a Simpsons fan:
And this brought back fond memories and prompted giggles. Of course, I am suffering from slight sleep deprivation today...
This flash animator did a fantastic job of translated the song into something new:

This made me laugh:
It is ten o'clock and I can now stop avoiding the prep and go to sleep!
August 22 costume challengesThe Kinetic Swing follows had dresses sewn by our director. Mine turned out to have three strikes against it, so it is out!
On Saturday Lyndon & I bought a pattern and fabric; today I went to a dressmaker.
I've never been measured that thoroughly - that was reassuring.
I've got a fitting in a week, so I'm hopeful that this one will be danceable while fitting in with the other costumes.

August 17 patting myself on the backTo most of you, this won't seem like something to be proud of, but I can now score pefectly on this test:
I have always been dismal at geography, so this is really quite an accomplishment!
![]() I've wanted to improve but wasn't sure how to go about it. About a month ago, when the Israel/Lebanon conflict was number one in the media, I was looking at maps, trying to figure out the countries involved. I decided that this was where I'd begin, with the middle east. I've accomplished that first geography goal, and it sure feels good.
They say that using your mind delays aging, so I will keep plugging away at Spanish, and I will set a new geography goal too.
Oh, and I challenge each of you to take the quiz too and report your score in a comment.
August 15 good timesYesterday I took Elisa to fill my massage appointment; it was her first professional massage and I think she liked it! Then Scott, Elisa, Lyndon, and I went to Wasabi for some very delicious maki. We were celebrating S&E's anniversary, which is on Saturday. We bought some Baked Expectation cheesecake to go, and ate it during a game of Texas Hold'em at our place.
Today I got my replacement massage. Later I mowed the lawn, then had a good visit with Mary.
Tomorrow we'll go to Steinbach and see all the Peters one more time before they head off to Saskatchewan later this week.
I'm looking forward to seeing Gina on Sunday and one day next week!
August 14 week in the WhiteshellIt isn't my idea of a vacation, but we had a good week in the Whiteshell. We stayed at a cabin in Penguin Resort at Faloma Beach (on Falcon Lake) while Lyndon's parents and his sister and her family camped at the Falcon Lake Beach campground. It was great family time.
Go to our webshots page to see photos.
The first evening we celebrated my MIL's birthday.
The first full day we tried to have a picnic lunch at Falcon Beach, but the wasps were so bad that we swore not to do that again. The wasp population was large and active at the campground. Avery was stung, as were Scott and Lyndon. Lauren was stung 3 times, and Mom stopped counting her stings! At the campground we ate and played games inside the kitchen tent, and had a flyswatter to kill the wasps that snuck in.
One evening we were invited to Win & Kathy's cabin. The kids fed the ducks and we watched a friendly deer. They also treated us to a boat ride; Scott, Lyndon and Dad had a quick water-ski. They have a very nice large cabin, and we enjoyed their hospitality. (Kathy is one of the owners of Hull's and so was Mom's boss when she managed Hull's in Steinbach, as well as Scott & Elisa's boss when they worked at the Winnipeg store.)
A lot of games were played this week:
Ezra & Lauren rode their bikes a lot and enjoyed it tremendously. They and Avery also enjoyed the playground and the beaches, as well as the treats the Grandma brought and bought.
I didn't quite make the book-per-day quota, but I did get a lot of time to read this week.
I finished three Sisterchicks books, which are surprisingly better than expected.
Gutteridge's The Splitting Storm was less about storms and more of a crime-mystery.
W. Dale Cramer's Levi's Will is likely as good as Bad Ground but its setting isn't quite so novel (Amish vs. mining).
I read most of Denton's Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, and most of the recent Geez magazine.
Robin McKinley's Spindle's End is delightful and magic-ful, a true fairy tale.
Our basement was a bit wet when we got home. Our downspout had clogged again, and that always causes some water to come through the basement window if we get heavy rains. >sigh<
Lyndon & I were happy to sleep in our own bed; the beds at the cabin were very challenging.
August 04 winter vacation problemsWe now have enough Aeroplan points to fly the three of us somewhere warm and tropical this winter! We would need to choose between Costa Rica and Mexico, both great options. The biggest problem is the possibility of another workteam (to Nicaragua) this winter. We can't afford a vacation and a workteam trip in one year, both in terms of finances and in terms of Lyndon's vacation time. We would enjoy having Lyndon's parents along, but they don't yet know their winter plans either! We would need to book our tickets soon; they recommend 6 months in advance to redeem points. I'm not sure HOW we'll come to a conclusion on this. I guess lack of a decision will default to no vacation, since the points won't magically exchange themselves for tickets. happy ThursdayLast night we were at The Forks, dancing to the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra.
What a fun evening! Great weather.
Bruce & Christelle were there, and it was great to see them again; they'd been in Europe in July. We reacquainted them with LindyHop.
We were surprised to see Al from Vancouver too. He is here for a few days, looking into some of Neil's investment options.
There was a larger swing-dancing crowd than some Thursdays get, so there were lots of folks to dance with. Most of the music was danceable, too, although the WJO plays very long songs (as many jazz bands do).
During the break's Argentine Tango lesson, we were off to the side and Al attempted to teach some of us Savoy Kicks and Crazy Legs. Time will tell how much of that sunk in to stay.
Two or three dance-fests like that every month would be my goal, although four or six per month would be even better!
August 02 you can quit gasping nowWe signed our wills today.
There was such a collective gasp when Lyndon announced/admitted that we didn't have wills (when he was promoting the Legacy for Ministry seminar).
So we found an executor, settled on a guardian, and had it done. Hopefully they won't be needed for a long time yet. conflictI am prepping a bunch of Todd's course for next year. One is called "The Young Peacemaker" and I am altering it slightly because it is aimed at a slightly younger age.
Here is a quote from the material, which is written by Corlette Sande:
So I've been thinking about what it would mean and what it would look like if we viewed conflict as an opportunity. |
